Hello all-

How are you? Just a quick update to let you know about the busy things that have been going on with me.

First, I have a entirely new show of photos. The Blumenthal Permforming Arts group in Charlotte asked me in May to put together a show of concert photos from the Charlotte area. In three weeks, I picked out, printed, framed and hung the show in three weeks. Instant karma? More like instant art! The show is now free to view anytime at the Knight Gallery at Spirit Square until November 22nd. The show is titled The Place To Be, and features photos from every current and past music venue in Charlotte that I've photographed over the last 22 years. Spirit Square is hosting an official opennig party on Friday, July 7th from 6 tp 9pm. Live music, free admission, and one big party. I hope to see you at the show this week, or sometime over the next few months. My show at the Charlotte Museum Of History is still there, and please check out that show, as well, if you haven't already.

Second, with the recent closing of the Double Door Inn, I have re-written the book on the venue that I originally co-wrote with the late Debby Wallace in 2008, and have this new version as the third and final edition of the book. Home Of The Blues: A History Of The Double Door Inn, is available on Amazon, and other independent book shops throughout North Carolina.

Lots of work the past several months. Two days of photos in June with the National Sports Media Association (NSMA), work with Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell and more as part of a concert with the Earl Scruggs Center, traveling to photograph various shows by Micky Dolenz, X, Rhiannon Giddens, and many others. Numerous events for Southpark Magazine, Charlotte Magazine, and many other clients. I have also been dragged out from behind the camera, as of late. Check out nice articles on me on Charlottefive.com, and Francene Morris recently did an excellent interview with me that covered a lot of ground. You can find all of these online, as well as links to them on my blog, danielcoston.blogspot.com.

And if you're wanting to see more of my work, here's where you can see what I've been working on.

Hello All-

Wow. Happy holidays, happy new year, happy mid-February. It all just went right by me! There's been so much going on. Let me get you, and me caught up on what's going on.

Thank you for following my work in the past year, as well as my exhibits at C3 Lab, the Levine Museum Of The New South, and the Charlotte Museum Of History. My exihibtion at the Museum Of History is still on the second floor, so come by and check it out anytime. Hopefully, I'll have some new shows to tell you about soon. Thank you to everyone that came to my library talks, Jesse Brown's Outdoors, Charlotte Museum Of History and elsewhere. I also have some more library talks coming this year, so stay tuned.

At th end of last year, I was part of documenting the closing of Charlotte's Double Door Inn, a venue of which I have documented for 22 years, and two versions of my book on the venue. It was an amazing and emotional thing to be a part of, and something that I'm still recovering from. WFAE did a great interview with myself, Double Door owner Nick Karres, and Bill Noonan here-

http://wfae.org/post/last-call-double-door-inn-look-back-43-years-charlottes-home-blues

I also contributed to the new documentary on the Double Door. Check it out on Amazon, and check out my recent Charlotte Podcast here-

https://thecharlottepodcast.com/2017/02/14/episode-059-the-double-door-inn/

There is much more to come from my time with the Double Door Inn, so stay tuned.

So much many different events, special events, galas and concerts over the past year. My sincere thank you to everyone that was a part of one of the busiest and most amazing years of my life. A huge highlight was lfiyng to Los Angeles to work with the Monkees on their 50th anniversary show with Michael Nesmith. Wow, just wow. And yes, I was back in Charlotte the next day to photograph three events. Other artists I recently photographed or worked with included the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson & band,  Chad & Jeremy (whom I worked with Bethesda, MD), Time Sawyer, Buckeye Lane, Party Battleship, Amigo, Sinners & Saints, and many, many more. Look out for Moonbeams No Mas, the new album by John Elderkin, which features some of my photos.

After sixteen years with the Charlotte Observer, the former Scene & Heard that I helmed is now exclusively in Southpark Magazine. I'll be continuing my work with Southpark, Charlotte Magazine, and other publications, as well as working more directly with organizations. So, see you at the next gala, as well.

As you may have noticed, a lot of my work is now posted on on pages other than this one. I'll still be posting updates and the occasional photo here, but here's a list of where to find me and my work online.

****************************

How are you? Wow, it has a busy, crazy year. There's so much to tell you about, and many things are coming soon. Let's start with where you can now see my photos, and where you can see them in the coming weeks.

The Charlotte Museum Of History has re-installed my photo retrospective, On The Way To Here, as a semi-permanent exhibit on their second floor. They will also be exhibiting more of photos in a new exhibit on Charlotte music venues, starting in November. My thanks to all of you that came to my talk at the Museum on August 25th. There will be more on this, so stay tuned.

In July, I opened a small exhibition at the Levine Museum Of The New South on the Milestone Club. I was involved in putting this show together, alongside the photos of the late Chris Radok. My thanks to Kate Baillon for curating this exhibit. This show is now on display until October 16th, and I should have more news on this show later this year.

And yes, there is more! On September 24th, I will be opening a new show of photos at C3 Lab, on Distribution Street in Charlotte's South End. The show is a retrospective of the first five years of my photos of the Charlotte music scene, from 1996 to 2001. There is lots of never-before-seen work in this show, nearly 90 photos of a remarkable time in Charlotte's music scene. The show will be on display for three weeks, and will open with a reception from 5:30pm to 9pm on the 24th with live music, and much more.

And do I have talks and book signings coming up? Of course! In fact, you can see me on the afternoon of Sept. 24th at the Plaza-Midwood Library, giving my From The 60s To Now talk about the NC Rock & Roll scene of the 1960s. You can also say hello to me on September 11th, as I will be signing copies of my NC Musicians Book at the Mast General Store in Winston-Salem, NC from 1pm to 4pm. My thanks to everyone that came out to see me at my recent talks at Cabarrus County libraries.

Where do I start on recent photo work? Two days of work on the upcoming Showtime series Shots Fired, with Richard Dreyfuss, Helen Hunt and many others. Work with Doyle auction house, McEwen Industries, Charlotte Observer, Charlotte Magazine, Southpark Magazine, O Report, and many other organizations and media outlets. I have four pages of photos in the recent Bear Family retrospective boxset, the new book by Elizabeth Carlson, entitled North Carolina String Masters, and I have three photos of Arthur Lee and Love in a new book entitled Where Have All The Popstars Gone?, Volume 3. My thanks to Diane Lee for asking to use those photos in the book. You can also see and read more of my work in the newly reformed Tangents Magazine, which has come roaring back after a 17-year hiatus. Check it all out at www.tangentsmag.com .

On the music side, photos with Emitt Rhodes in Los Angeles in February. New photos with the likes of Chatham County Line, Jayhawks, Jay Farrar, Brian Wilson, the Sammies, Whigs, Sweet Potato Pie, and several more. I have been photographing several Monkees concerts throughout the years, as the band has celebrated their 50th anniversary. Check out the band's Tour FB page for my photos, and soon there will be more to share with you. A special point of pride for me this year is having a whole page of my photos in the Beach Boys' new tour program. The Beach Boys were the first concert I ever saw, and all of these years later, I can now put them on my long list of great artists that I've worked with.

There is always more going on with me, so please check out this page, or my blog, danielcoston.blogspot.com for more info. Safe travels to Merle Haggard, Ralph Stanley, and all of the great musicians that we have lost this year. My sincere thanks to all of you that follow this fun madness, and I hope to see you at the next adventure.

See you on the road,

-Daniel September 4, 2016

If you would like to see more of my work, feel free to check out this site, or danielcoston.blogspot.com. You can find much of my work with musicians via a Google search, or at my new show at the Charlotte Museum Of History, which is now open until the end of the year. You can also find my work on the website of a number of my clients, ranging from the Charlotte Observer, to UNC-Charlotte, and a number of non-profits that I also work with.

I also suggest that you seek out a number of the great photographers that work throughout Charlotte. Start with the Light Factory, and discover the great work that exists around us. Fine Arts? Commercial? Event photography? We’re all photographers, first and foremost, and their work also deserves your attention. The ultimate goal is to create, and create again, whatever genre one’s work falls into. And that is what I hope to keep doing, as I know that my fellow photographers, artists, and writers will do, as well.

Again, thank you, and I’ll see you all again soon. Safe travels.

Hello All-

Here we are, smack in the middle of 2015. My apologies for having gone so long without an update. There’s been a lot going on. Here’s a few of the highlights.

I have three photos in the new Wilco best-ofs. Two photos (including one spread over pages 2 & 3) in the two-CD collection, and one photo in the four-CD rarities set. Check them out, and check out all the great music, again. There’s a few CDs/DVDs coming soon with my photos, which I’ll update soon.

Recent work with bands includes the legendary Jayhawks, Big Star Third, British Invasion Tour (see them on tour again soon), Carolina Chocolate Drops, Chita Rivera, Sommore, Dollar Past Sunset, and others. There’s been lots of work with the Charlotte Obsever, and many other print and web magazines. I’m also doing some photos now for CLTure.org. You can check out a number of my photos on this site, as well as a couple of reviews.

My friend Tyler Baum recently interviewed me about some of the people I’ve photographed here.

You can also go to my blog, danielcoston.blogspot.com, for a number of my new photos, and writings. If you’ve come here to check out my event photography, go to danielcoston.photoreflect.com. If I’ve photographed you at a gala or social function, this is where you will find my photo of you!

My new book, detailing my photos through the years of the WBT Briarhoppers, is now available, and can be purchased here.

You can find out more about all of my books at fortcanogapress.blogspot.com. Yes, we’re up to four now!

I have a lot of book discussions and signings coming up this spring and summer. A full list will be posted shortly. In the meantime, we’re bringing back the 3rd Annual Charlotte 60s Rock & Roll Reunion at the Neighborhood Theatre on June 27th. This year’s lineup features the Bondsmem and the Mod VI, both of whom are reuniting for the first time in 45 years. The Mannish Boys, and another surprise artist will rock out the bill. Tickets are available at www.neighborhoodtheatre.com.

Thanks to everyone for all your support, and see you on the road.

Some of you know me from my years of shooting social events and gala here in Charlotte, and elsewhere. I've finally gone the professional photographer route, and set up a site where people can buy those photos online. You can go directly to-

danielcoston.photoreflect.com

and find those event photos for sale. Photos will still be available from me, as well, but this is one way for people to find and order my photos. Thanks, and see you at the next event.

Hello All-

I hope you’re all having a good summer. Here’s what has been going on around here.

My thanks to all that came out to the Charlotte Museum Of History, and the Neighborhood Theater for our release parties for the second edition of the NC 1960s book, There Was A Time. Both events were a lot of fun. Thanks also to those that came out for my recent booksigning for the NC Musicians book in Boone, NC. We hope to do some more with this book later this year, so stay tuned.

After some time away from photographing music, I’ve started to pick up some cool gigs again. Recent live and posed shoots include work with Procol Harum, the Beach Boys (via Endless Summer Quarterly), Loudermilks, Tom Maxwell. A new EP by the Howlin’ Brothers features a photo I took of the band last year. Other recent live shows include John Mayall, Phil and Dave Alvin, Marc Cohn, Ringo Starr, GTownsound, Alejandro Escovedo, St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and many others. I’ve also done shot many events for the Charlotte Observer, and other clients.

My friend Holly George-Warren has released her book on Alex Chilton, A Man Called Destruction, which features one of my photos and three of my interviews. Holly is speaking at the Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, NC on August 23rd, the night after my friends in Big Star Third are performing. If you’re anywhere near Chapel Hill that week, please come by and check out these remarkable events.

I’ll have more info soon about events I’ll be a part of in the fall. More photos will be posted here soon, and also check out more of my work at danielcoston.blogspot.com, and friend me on Facebook to keep up with my day-to-day adventures. Safe travels to all, and I hope to see you on the road.

**********************************

Oh wow. It's mid-March. How did that happen? First, let me wish you all a happy 2014. Last year was a busy one here, and this one promises to be another good year. Let me get you caught up on all of the new details.

We're releasing a second edition of There Was A Time in June, with lots more interviews, photos, and a whole new design. My friend Greg Russell, with whom I've worked with since the Tangents Magazine days, is doing the design for this new edition, and it sure looks good. We'll be re-releasing the book with not one, but two big events in June. On June 12th at 6pm, I'll be giving a talk about the book at the Charlotte Museum Of History. I'll be talking about the music scene in Charlotte during the 1960s, and showing photos, and playing records from that era. My co-author Jake Berger and the Mannish Boys will then be playing a short set of the songs from that era. We'll then be returning to the Neighborhood Theatre on June 21st at 8pm for a big blowout extravaganza, with the Mannish Boys, Good Bad & The Ugly, Young Ages, and more. The Museum Of History event is free, and we'll be announcing more info soon about the Neighborhood Theatre.

In December, I re-released the Double Door Inn book for the venue's 40th anniversary. This new edition, released this time by Fort Canoga Press (as will both editions of There Was A Time) features a new chapter from yours truly, new pictures, and the first-ever publication of photos that were taken the night that Eric Clapton walked onstage. All of these books, including my North Carolina Musicians book, are available on Amazon.com, and stay tuned for more great releases from Fort Canoga Press in the coming year.

If you're in Shelby, NC anytime soon, I'll be appearing at Fireside Books on March 22nd at 2:30pm to talk about all of my books. Please come by and check out this great store, and say hello.

My thanks to everyone that emailed me about my photo in the Johnny Cash biography. Later this month, my friend Holly George-Warren will release A Man Called Destruction. This biography of Alex Chilton features one of my photos, and three of my interviews with members of the Big Star circle.

I have photos in the new CD from Wink Keziah, entitled Cowbilly. I also did the photos for Underhill Rose's Christmas CD, which you can still purchase. There's been lots of recent shoots, as of late. Photographing Chad & Jeremy in Long Island, NY. I took posed and live shots of the the legendary Sonics in Cleveland, Ohio last month, and you will hopefully see some of those photos soon. Recent shoots include posed and live pics with the Carolina Chocolate Drops, live pics of the Blind Boys Of Alabama, Dave Mason, Jonathan Wilson, Lake Street Dive, Cyndi Lauper, Shovels & Rope, ZZ Ward, and many more. I've also had several of my photos published in the Charlotte Observer, Charlotte Magazine (which featured some early 1995-1996 pics from my archives), and several others. A personal highlight was watching Rhiannon Giddens of the Carolina Chocolate Drops give Dom Flemons one of my pics as a going-away present. That was a complete surprise to me, and I'm honored to have been there to document their history.

Too many RIP's to speak of, as of late. Lou Reed, Pete Seeger, Missi Ivie, Tara Engstrom, John Studwell. I also recently learned that my best friend from childhood, David Pasquale, passed away in 1993. As I knew you once, so I will know you again. Safe travels to all, check out danielcoston.blogspot.com for more info and ramblings from me, and I will see you all again soon.

PS, I'll also be promoting my NC Musicians book in Asheville on November 1st at 7pm, at Malaprops book store. Hope to see you there.

Hello All-

Wow, where did the summer go? My thanks to everyone that has been a part of my summer. There is a lot going on here, so let's begin with news on my books.

North Carolina Musicians: Photographs And Conversations, is now out through McFarland Books (www.mcfarlandbooks.com). This book features 140 of my photos, and my stories about the musicians that make up this great state. The book also features new interviews with everyone from Scott Avett, to the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Chatham County Line, Mandolin Orange, Tift Merritt, Si Kahn, and many more. The book is starting to garner good reviews, and I'm very proud to see this book in print.

Along with distribution throughout the state, I'll also be doing signings to promote the book, as well as my other projects. I'll be at Park Road Books on September 26th, at 7pm. You can also swing by the Charlotte Folk Society gathering at the Great Aunt Stella Center on Sept. 13th. I'll also be in Asheville, NC at the fabled Malaprops store on November 1st, at 7pm. Plans are also in the works for a book release party at the Evening Muse, in Charlotte on November 19th. More news soon about this show.

My thanks to Divakar Shukla and 106.5FM (www.1065.com) for interviewing me last week for their local music show. You can next hear me on the air on Chapel Hill station WCOM (www.wcomfm.org), for their Carolina Book Beat show (carolinabookbeat.com) at 10am on September 9th. More media appearances are soon to come.

My sincere thanks to everyone who came out to There Was A Time's book release party on June 28th. It went so well, that the Neighborhood Theatre has asked us to do it again next year. Stay tuned for this show in June 2014. In the meantime, The Mannish Boys and I will be hosting a Kick Out The Garage night at Snug Harbor, on November 8th, with a host of cool garage rock bands. More news on this show soon. You can also keep up with the book at its website, therewasatimebook.blogspot.com. The book's publisher, Fort Canoga Press, also now has a website at fortcanogapress.blogspot.com. Watch that space soon for info on the re-release of an important book.

Alabama Ass Whuppin, the album that I shot for the Drive By Truckers in 2000, is getting re-issued next week by ATO Records, with all new (old) photos from yours truly. The packaging for this album looks fantastic, and I'm glad that DBT fans will finally be able to hear this record. Another new old record, entitled 1999, is being released this month by Son Volt. The front and back cover are pics that I took at a Son Volt show way back when. You can pick up the record online, or at the band's shows. I also did photos for Randy Franklin's new CD, Bloodlines, which I recommend you check out.

It's hard to believe that it has been ten years since I photographed Johnny Cash's final shows. The Cash family asked if they could use one of my photos from these shows in a new Cash biography by Robert Hilburn, which will be out next month. This promises to be an amazing book, and I'm thrilled to be a part of it.

There was a lot to see over the summer. On June 6th, I went to New York City to work with the Left Banke. This show featured Michael Brown playing "Walk Away Renee" with the band for the first time in 45 years. Wow! It was a fun blur of a trip. Other recent photos shoots include the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Craver/Hicks/Watson/Newberry (the original Red Clay Ramblers members), Sue Massey (as she recorded an album with Si Kahn), the Monkees (check out their Facebook page for more pics, as well my blog), Anthony Hamilton and Ed D. Kane, and several more. Other recent photos in print include the August cover of Society Charlotte Magazine, Charlotte Observer, Southpark Magazine (which excerpted my NC Musicians book in July), and several others. Lots more is coming in the fall. Stay tuned.

More news soon on much of this. Stop back here often, or at my blog, danielcoston.blogspot.com. Thanks again to you all, and safe travels.

Hello-

Wow. There's lots to tell you about.

First, if you are here looking to see photos from the recent MICA Awards, you can see them all here- http://micaawardsphotos2013.blogspot.com.  Email me here if you are interested in prints from the event.

My book, "There Was A Time: Rock In The 1960s In Charlotte, And North Carolina", is now out through Fort Canoga Press. Myself and co-writer Jake Berger will be celebrating the book's release with a booksigning at Park Road Books, here in Charlotte on June 26th, at 7pm. We'll then be bringing the best of the Charlotte bands from the 1960s back together with a big release party at the Neighborhood Theater on June 28th, at 8pm. The Young Ages, Good Bad & The Ugly, the Abbadons (first show since 1967), the Mannish Boys and more will be helping celebrate the book's release. I'll be MCing the show, and books will be available that night for purchase. Tickets are $15, and are available at the show, as well as www.neighborhoodtheatre.com.

With all of that going on, my other book, "North Carolina Musicians: Photographs And Conversations", will be available in mid-July through McFarland Publications. The book is now available for pre-order on Amazom.com here - http://www.amazon.com/North-Carolina-Musicians-Photographs-Conversations/dp/0786474610/ref=pd_sim_sbs_b_1

Southpark Magazine will be excerpting parts of the book in their July issue. I also hope to be traveling the state this summer, in support of this book.

"Something Real", the debut album from Underhill Rose, is now out. I did all of the photos for this CD, and it was an absolute joy to work with this Asheville-based trio of ladies. Please search the record out, it's worth the journey.

Lots of recent shoots. Work with various bands, the aforementioned MICA Awards, the Blumey Awards, Women Executives gala, various shoots for the City's recent Sit-Ins and Eat-Ins project, many shoots with the Charlotte Observer, Charlotte Magazine, Charlotte Post, and many others. There is also a few other big projects that I'll be able to tell you more about shortly.

Thank you again for all your support, and I hope to see you all somewhere soon. Safe travels,

June 5, 2013
PS, Happy birthday to Sandra Barley, my collaborator and fellow passenger in the happy madness that is my life.

Hello All-

Wow, it's April, isn't it? A happy belated Easter to all. The past few months have been a busy time here, and there's lots to tell you about.

My photo and interview book, North Carolina Musicians: Photographs and Conversations, will be out through McFarland Publications (www.mcfarlandpub.com ) around June. For all of you that wanted me to put together my photos of NC musicians from the last 16 years, this is it. It's got 140 photos, 19 interviews with the likes of Scott Avett, Dom Flemons, Si Kahn, Tift Merritt, John and Chandler of Chatham County Line, and many more, as well as stories and reflections from yours truly. The book will also be available as an EBook, and will be available in stores throughout the Southeast. More on this book soon, as well as a book tour.

Through no manner of planning, I also have another book coming out in the coming weeks. There Was A Time: Rock & Roll in the 1960s in Charlotte, and North Carolina, is the story of the Garage Rock and Psychedelica scene in the Charlotte area, and throughout the state. This book is a co-write with Jacob "Jake" Berger, and features nearly forty interviews. No photos from yours truly, but you do get the true story of legendary bands such as the Paragons, Grifs, New Mix, Stowaways, and many more. We will be announcing the publisher for this book shortly. This book is currently in layout, and should be available shortly. You can follow the book, and where to get copies at therewasatimebook.blogspot.com.

One of the chapters for There Was A Time will be excerpted in the next issue of the legendary Ugly Things Magazine. (www.ugly-things.com) Speaking of magazine publications, the next issue of the Big Takeover Magazine (www.bigtakeover.com) will feature my interviews with Gary Brooker of Procol Harum, and Vince Melouney, original guitarist for the Bee Gees. My thanks also goes out to everyone that saw my Avett Brothers photos in the January issue of Our State Magazine.  My photos of Doug Dillard and Duck Dunn were featured in the Grammy broadcast in February, which was an amazing and surreal thing to witness. My thanks to the Grammy folks for reaching out to me, and to Doug and Duck, and their families. God bless you both.

Lots of recent photoshoots! I spent a couple of days in Asheville working with the fantastic Underhill Rose (www.underhillrose.com), shooting studio and posed pics for their upcoming album. I photographed Si Kahn and son Gabe Kahn last week, as they put together a collaborative album. Other recent work includes shoots with Sweet Potato Pie (www.sweet-potato-pie.com), Caleb Caudle and Haley Dreis, John Cobett (yes, the actor) and Chris Stamey. By the way, Chris Stamey's new album, Lovesick Blues (photographed by yours truly) is now out, and getting some of the best reviews of Chris' career. That's saying something! You may have also seen some of my photos on the Monkees' official Facebook tour page. That was pretty cool!

How do you know when you're a photography veteran? When the albums you photographed early in your career get reissued. I've recently been working on photos for the reissue of the Drive By Truckers album, Alabama Ass Whuppin', which I originally photographed in 2000. For many people, this will be their first exposure to this great record, and I look forward to people discovering this CD. Also, the $2 Pistols and Tift Merritt EP, which I did the recording studio pics for in 1999, is now out of vinyl. Look for more of my Yep Roc-photographed records to come out on vinyl soon. It all looks better with vinyl packaging!  On that same front, Son Volt is back, and recently bought two of my photos from way back when for a tour-only CD, which features recording of the band from 1999. It's amazing to see photos I took all those years ago presented that way, especially with a band that I've been a longtime fan of. Check out the CD at the band's upcoming shows. I recently been interviewed by Joe Kendrick and his new What It Is video show (www.iamavl.com, or whatitisradio.org). That show will hopefully appear on Youtube soon. Jeremy Davis of Elonzo also interviewed me for his Skelepod blog (http://skelepod.podbean.com/2013/02/18/episode-3-daniel-coston/ ), which I recommend checking out. My thanks to everyone that came out in late February for my last- minute show at CHP Studios. That was a lot of fun. If you want to see me again in person, I'll be doing an interview and conversation with Chuck Johnson on April 23rd, as part of Elizabeth Teagarden's house concert series. Several of my photos from the upcoming NC Musicians book will also be on display, and you can pre-order copies of my upcoming books. Go to Chuck Johnson's page for more info, or email me. I will also be speaking at USC on April 11th, talking about the importance of photography in presenting music. This presentation is not open to the public, but I'll provide details later. On top of shooting many events for various media outlets and organizations, there's been lots of recent cool shows. Jeff Mangum, Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell, Matrimony, Justin & Rhiannon of the
Chocolate Drops, Cowboy Junkies, Patterson Hood, Shawn Colvin & Mary Chapin Carpenter, and many more. You can check out a lot of my recent photos, as well as new articles and essays at my blog, danielcoston.blogspot.com. More pics are coming here soon.

More big news coming soon, including announcements on a new gallery signing, and photos for an upcoming Charlotte calendar. My thanks to all that follow that madness that is my life, and I hope to see you all somewhere soon.

Safe travels, -Daniel

Hey everyone-

Merry Christmas! There's been a lot going on, so let me get you up to date.

My photos of a certain Charlotte author went web crazy last month, after photographing her just a few days before the big story broke. My photo was purchased for usage by People Magazine, New York Daily News, New York Post, and NBC/MSNBC, and has been posted online by many other outlets around the world. I was also interviewed by People Magazine about taking photos of said author. It was an interesting week, to say the least, but I'm glad to have seen the hubbub die down.

The day before the People interview, I did a lengthy interview with Our State Magazine about the early days of the Avett Brothers. The magazine also purchased some of my photos of the band for the article. They'll be hard to miss! It will either be the January or Febaruary issue, I will keep you posted when the issue is on the stands.

In late November, I had the great honor of photographing the Monkees tour in Glenside, PA. It was a a thrill to see Mike Nesmith in action, and to finally photograph a Monkees show. Some of my photos from the show are now up on the band's Facebook tour page, as well as my blog. Hopefully, you'll see more of my photos in the coming year.

My Procol Harum promo photos were used all over Japan this month, as the band did a well-received tour of the country. Other places that my photos have turned up included the Charlotte Observer, Charlotte Magazine, Southpark Magazine, cover of Myers Park Life, Society Charlotte, Bedford Magazine (Ridgefield, CT, which used my photo for a feature on Beach Boy David Marks), and many others. If you've seen my photos in other places, let me know. It's been hard to keep up with
the photos, as of late.

Lots of cool shoots, recently. The Who concert in Washington, DC, the Hit Men in Newberry, SC, Chatham County Line holiday tour in Greenville, SC. Back in North Carolina, recent shoots include Willie Nelson, the Gathering, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Wanda Jackson, promo photos with the Mack Fowler Band, and shoots with many other clients. You'll see some of these photos on this site shortly, but also check out my blog, danielcoston.blogspot.com, for photos and ramblings about
my adventures.

I am currently waiting to see the proofs for the NC Musicians book (now officially titled "North Carolina Musicians: Photographs And Conversations"), and will keep you posted. I am also supposed to be working right now on finishing my book on the NC rock and roll scene of the 1960s, but work has been slow, due to my recent work blitz. I'll keep you posted on this one, as well.

Godspeed to so many good people that we've also lost in recent weeks. I also want to welcome my new niece, Milah Andrea Parks, into the world. Seeing her is, for me, seeing all the possibilities that life can offer us. You can also read my welcoming letter to Milah on my blog. My family cried when they read it, so I hope that is a good thing. Thank you to everyone that helped make this year one of the best in my life, and I hope to see you again in the coming months.
Safe travels,
-Daniel

Hello All-

How are you? Oh, wow, has it been THAT long since I posted an update?  My apologies. It's been a really busy time during the few months. Let me get you caught up on what's been going on.  My book on North Carolina Musicians is now finished, and accepted by McFarland Publications. This book features 140 photos, and 60,000 from yours truly. It's a big book, let me tell you. I am currently hoping for a spring release for the book, and I will keep you posted as the publication draws closer. I am also currently working on finishing the NC 1960s book, and hope to have more information on this project soon.

You can also see my photos in the new book on the history of country music, entitled, appropriately enough, Country Music. The book was put together by my friend Jocelyn Neal, and released worldwide through Oxford University (US) Press. I have ten photos in this weighty tome, and it's an honor to be a part of this project. Some of the older photos of Whiskeytown are also being used to promote Losering, a new book by David Menconi on Ryan Adams and Whiskeytown. You can see some of these photos in the November 2012 issue of American Songwriter Magazine.

This month, I took part in the Yep Roc 15 art exhibit, at the Artscenter in Carrboro, NC. I turned in 22 photos, spanning Yep Roc's 15 year history. I hope you got to see the show. My thanks to everyone who also came out to see my photos in recent exhibitions in Marshall, NC, as well as Jack Beagle's restaurant in Charlotte. My work is still on display at Circa Gallery in Asheboro, NC, Amplified Art Gallery in Raleigh, NC, and a couple of galleries in Ohio. I'm also currently exhibiting some photos at Bruce Julian Clothiers, in Charlotte. Come by and check out the photos, and the clothes.

Speaking of Yep Roc Records, I recently did some photos for the label for the opening night of their YR15 festival. I also did both album and promo photos for the forthcoming Chris Stamey solo album, which will be released by Yep Roc in early 2013. The Chris Stamey photos came out very nice, and I look forward to having you check out the album. I also have several photos in the new Chatham County Line live album, entitled Sight And Sound. I also did the photos for the debut album by Jesus & Mary Chain guitarist Mark Crozer, which I recommend you check out.

A big highlight for me this summer was traveling to New York City in August to photograph the Zombies and Left Banke shows. This was a big thrill for me to work with two of my all-time favorite bands, and getting all the original members to pose together for the first time ever was an amazing experience. Both bands sound great, and I recommend you check them both out when they play your hometown.

Another big thrill was doing promo photos for the legendary Procol Harum, as well as interviewing the band's leader, Gary Brooker. I have posted a portion of this interview on my blog, danielcoston.blogspot.com, and look forward to more in the near future. I also did some photos this summer with Matrimony, Bobby Rush, Mitch Easter, Janis Ian & Tom Paxton, Underhill Rose, the NC Music Hall of Fame, and many others.

Speaking of the Left Banke, I recently did an interview with Tom& George of the Left Banke for the Beach Boys fan magazine, Endless Summer Quarterly. Look for it in an upcoming issue. You can also see part two of my interviews with Johnny and Michael of Love in the winter edition of the Big Takeover Magazine. I also recently had photos in Ugly Things Magazine, Bedford (Massachusetts) Magazine, which featured one of my portraits of Beach Boys guitarist David Marks, Southpark Magazine, and many other magazines and newspapers.

As we head towards the holiday season, I wish to remind you all to take care of each other, and the ones you love. Happy fifth anniversary to my wife Sandra, and happy eighth birthday to our cat, Milo. Godspeed to Patrick Atkinson of Mar, Bryson Avery, Bill Doss, and too many others. Safe travels to you all, and I hope to see you again soon.

Hello Everyone-

Wow, it's July now. How did that happen? I hope you all are doing well, and staying out of the hot sun. There's been a lot going on, some let's recap some recent happenings.  My thanks go out to the Madison County Arts Center, in Marshall, NC, for letting me do a two-month retrospective of my photos. I hope that we can do something again soon. My thanks to everyone that came out to that show, and my April show at 22 Gallery, here in Charlotte.  I have started exhibiting photos at Jack Beagle's restaurant, in the NoDa section of Charlotte. (www.jackbeagles.com) I currently have nine photos, all in large sizes, and all prints are for sale. Please come by, and check out the photos.

Falling Off The Sky, the new album by the dbs, which was (mostly) photographed by me, is now out, and getting some great press. My promo photos of the band have been featured in Uncut Magazine, Blurt Magazine, and others outlets. It's a great thrill to be involved with this project. Also out now is the GTown Sound Reunion DVD, featuring reunion performances from several of Gastonia's top bands from the 1960s. I did the photos for last year's concert, and the DVD packaging makes my pics look darn good, I have to say. Look up the DVD to get a copy.

Recent shoots include with Jesse Colin Young, the Sights, the Left Banke, Mike Cross, Matrimony, live and posed photos with Nick Lowe, for Yep Roc Records, among other recent shoots. I also spent some time recently at Reflection studios, photographing a session for legendary producer Bill Szymzyck, and a Fantasia session for an upcoming gospel album. I also photographed the Beach Boys reunion tour for Endless Summer Quarterly (www.esquarterly.com), and both Micky Dolenz and Happy Together reunion tour has asked about using my photos of their recent tour stop in Hiawasee, GA. Other recent work includes ongoing projects with UNCC, Observer, Charlotte Magazine, Charlotte Post and others, as well as work with the Amercian Diabetes Association, Crothall & Associates, and the North Carolina Dieticians Association.

As I write this, I am working on finishing my book on North Carolina musicians. Hopefully, you will see this book sometime in the coming year. Once this is done, I will work on finishing my book on the North Carolina rock scene of the 1960s. Lots of travels and photos are also planned in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.

Godspeed to Doc Watson, Matt Brown, Doug Dillard, Ray Bradbury, and all the good people that we have lost in recent weeks. Take care of yourselves, and take care of each other, and I hope to see you all somewhere soon. Safe travels,
-Daniel

Hello Everyone-

Oh wow, where did the first four months of this year go? It's been a fun and busy time for me, as of late, with multiple projects going on at once. Let's start with the news on where you can see my photos. I'm happy to announce that I'll be doing my first show of photos in Charlotte in three years. Gallery 22 (www.gallerytwentytwo.com) will be displaying my photos throughout the month of April. The show is entitled Wish You Were There, and features some of my best-known photos from the past fifteen years. There will be some old favorites, as well as some new work. Opening night will be on April 7th, and I will be there, so please come by. Gallery 22 is located on the corner of Central Avenue & Pecan, in the Plaza-Midwood neighborhood. I will then be doing my largest retrospective to date, with a two- month exhibition at the Madison County Arts Center, in Marshall, NC throughout May and June. Marshall is a great arts community about a half-hour north of Asheville, and this will be the largest space I have ever exhibited in. The show is called Music, Photography and Life, and will feature a lot of work from my archives that has never been seen before, and will feature a good deal of subjects away from music. Check out the facility at www.madisoncountyarts.com.

On March 15th of this month, I flew to Austin, TX to do the official photos for the Big Star Third show, as part of the SXSW festival. As you may know, I did the photos for the first version of this show in late 2010, in Chapel Hill. This show was possibly the best and most fun to work on, and my thanks to everyone that was involved with this project. There will be a live album coming from this show, and I'm currently preparing my photos for the CD's artwork. You can also see several of my photos from this show on my blog, danielcoston.blogspot.com.

Lots of shoots with cool artists recently. The legendary Jonathan Edwards, a new shoot with the dbs (whose new record, photographed by yours truly, will be out soon), former Jesus & Mary Chain guitarist Mark Crozer, Glenn Miller Orchestra (check out my photos at their website), Shearwater (see my photos at shearwatermusic.com), Ashley Jo Farmer, Loudermilks, Colby Dabbs, Tiny Boxes, Dip Ferrelle & The Truetones (whose new album features my photos), Popes, Lenny Federal, Randy Franklin, and many others. Some of my other clients recently include the Charlotte Observer, Charlotte Magazine, Mint Museum, UNC- Charlotte, Southern Folklife Collection at UNC-Chapel Hill (where I finally to meet and photograph the legendary Dick Waterman), and several others. The Observer has been putting a good deal of my event photography on their website, under the Scene & Heard section. Please check it out.

I have a tentative deal with a publisher for my photo book on North Carolina musicians, for publication next year. I am currently finishing the writing on that project, and then will finally finish the book on the North Carolina rock scene of the 60s. As I've mentioned before, Oxford University Press in Alabama will soon feature ten of my photos in a book on the history of country music. Other projects are also in the works.

Lots of cool recent shows, starting with photographing Aretha Franklin at a private concert in Charlotte, just two days after Whitney Houston's passing. The Charlotte Observer published several of my photos, and you can read about this show on my blog. Other recent great events include the Moody Blues, Arlo Guthrie, Matrimony, and others. I also recently got to do photos of Sugar Lay Leonard and Roberto Duran together, which was a real thrill. I also photographed the Mad Monster Party in Charlotte last weekend, where I got to photograph David Prowse (Darth Vader), Linda Blair, Rutger Hauer and many others. That was fun!

Best wishes go out to the family and friends of Joe Thompson, as well as my friend Eric Krause, both of whom we lost recently. Godspeed to Davy Jones, and all of you lonely travelers. I've been having a very good time, as of late, despite my hectic schedule, and I hope to see you all again soon.

Safe travels,
-Daniel

Hello Everyone-

Wow, what an amazing, insane year it has been. Overall, it has been one of my best years as a photographer, and one of the better years of my life, period. Thank you all very much for being a part of it. Here's a recap of some of my recent highlights.

The book "House Of Cash," which features four of my photos of Johnny Cash, has gotten a lot of interest, and is a book I highly recommend. Pam Kelley of the Charlotte Observer recently did a short piece on my involvement with the book, which you can read here-http://readinglifeobs.blogspot.com/2011/12/new-johnny-cash-book-features-charlotte.html

The new issue of Southern Cultures Magazine (www.southerncultures.org) is out, and features a 12 page piece on my photos, focusing on the backstage area at shows. I will be interviewed about this issue sometime in January on the State Of Things show, on WUNC public radio.

I'm also proud to announce that I will have ten photos in a book about the history of country music, which will be out this summer from Oxford University Press, in Alabama. Along with a few other book contributions in the pipeline (more on these soon), I am also currently editing my book about the NC rock scene in the 1960s, and I'm talking with a publisher about finally putting together my coffee table book on NC musicians. More on this soon!

1960s pop legends Chad & Jeremy have a new record out, "Reflection," which I shot in Shelby, NC last year. Check out the album here, and look for a piece I wrote about shooting this album, on their website soon.  http://www.chadandjeremy.net/ep/rmusic.htm

My Guided by Voices pics are everywhere, at the moment, including four photos in a huge feature for Magnet Magazine. Look for them in the coming weeks. The new issue of the Big Takeover is also out, and features two new feature article from me, as well as photos.

I recently taped several episodes of What It Is, on WNCW radio. You can check them out here-www.whatitisradio.org

Lots of cool recent shoots, including shooting Scott Avett again, as he made a donation to the Second Harvest Food Bank (www.secondharvest.org ). New pics with Chatham County Line, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Maurice Williams, NC Music Hall of Fame ceremony, Jorma Koukonen and Stefan Grossman, David Childers and Jim Avett, and others. Other great live shows I shot recently include Ray Davies, Jayhawks, Peter Yarrow, Andy Irvine, Rosanne Cash and others. I have also started doing all of UNCC's arts photography, which has kept me busy, along with shoots for the Observer, Charlotte Magazine, Charlotte Post, Mint Museum, Women Executives of Charlotte, Charlotte City Gov't, and others.

You may have also heard that I have a blog now, for all my various writings, and (occasionally) photographs. New articles up every week, so please stop by danielcoston.blogpsot.com.

My thanks to everyone that came out to my show in Raleigh. Be on the lookout for shows in Charlotte, and Marshall, NC in the coming year, as well as continued displays in Raleigh, Asheboro, two cities in Ohio, and other places.

Lastly, I want to send my best wishes to the friends and family of Rodney Lanier, a great friend and musician that passed away recently. On the spur of the moment, I spoke at Rodney's memorial, and I meant every word I said. Rodney, you will always be missed, and never forgotten. My love also goes out to Hubert Sumlin, Willie Smith, and others that will be missed.

Merry Christmas to everyone out there, and I look forward to seeing you all soon,
-Daniel

Hello Everyone-

It's fall, which means that photos are falling like leaves from the sky. There's lots to tell you about, so let's start with my new show in Raleigh.

" From The Song, To The Show," is a new show of my photos, documenting the creative process of musicians. Many of these photos have never been seen, or exhibited before. The opening night event will be this Friday, Oct. 7th, at Amplified Gallery in Raleigh (www.amplifiedgallery.com), at their new location at 325 Blake Street. Check out the flyer for the show, and the opening night event here-

" House Of Cash," the new book by John Carter Cash about his famous parents, is out this month from Insight Editions. I have four photos in this book, and I'm really honored to have my photos alongside many of my own photographer heroes. My thanks to everyone involved with this project. In the meantime, I've been digging through my archives recently for three different book projects, all of which are in various stages. More on this soon. There'll also be some CD reissue projects in the coming year that I've been working on.

Southern Cultures Magazine (www.southerncultures.org), a fantastic quarterly magazine produced by UNC, will feature my photos in a 12 page spread in their November issue. The magazine also comes with a free CD, with all of the bands on the CD based around the photos in my article. It's a cool thing!

Among my recent shoots was photographing Guided by Voices' "final" show in Raleigh last month, at the Hopscotch festival. Mojo Magazine soon picked up one of my photos for an article about GBV's forthcoming new album. Check out the article here- http://www.mojo4music.com/blog/2011/09/guided_by_voices_classic_line.html

Along with being able to see more of my pics at GBV's site (www.gbv.com), the band will also be using several of the Hopscotch photos to promote the new album. Be on the lookout for them in the coming months.

Recent shoots include work with the Mint Museum, Charlotte Post, Charlotte Magazine, Goodwill, Blues & Burritos festival, and a host of other clients. I'm also happy to announce that I have also started a companion to this site, dedicated to just my interviews, essays, and other musings and ramblings. This site will always be my photographic home, but check out over 15 years worth of my "other" work at-
danielcoston.blogspot.com

Tangents Magazine (www.tangentsmag.com) is also back up and running, and new articles from me will be up there soon. The December issue of the Big Takeover (www.bigtakeover.com) will also feature two new articles from me.

Best wishes to you all, and take care,
-Daniel

information, check the Columbia Museum's website here- http://www.columbiamuseum.org/events/talksandtours

I hope to see you all soon. More news coming shortly,

May 8, 2011

Hey Everyone-

It's been a busy past few weeks. Let's get right to what's going on.

I have been chosen to have six photos in "We Shoot Rock," a companion exhibition to the Columbia Museum's excellent Who Shot The Rock exhibit of rock photography. My photos will be hanging at the Free Times gallery, which is directly across the street from the Columbia
Museum, on Main Street in downtown Columbia, SC. Come on out and join me and several other photographers for the opening night party on April 7th from 5:30 to 10pm. It's gonna be a party!

My thanks to all of you that have come out to my retrospective in Asheboro, NC. The show just has a few days left, so please go by Circa Gallery (www.circagallerync.com) and check it out.

Many of you know that I am longtime fan of the super '60s pop group Left Banke. (You can even check out my 2003 interview with the band at www.leftbanke.nu .) So when the band recently reformed to play their first shows in 43 years, I jumped at the chance to work with them. Seeing the band play two sold out shows at Joe's Pub on March 6th and 7th was a dream come true for me. Check out my photos from that weekend on the band's Facebook fan page, and look for them in the May issue of the Big Takeover, accompanied by a new interview with the band.

Another great gig the following weekend was doing photos at an open house for Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash's house in Hiltons, VA, just down the street from where I photographed Mr. Cash in 2003. The home had originally belonged to Maybelle Carter, and my deep thanks goes out to the Cash and Carter families for being so gracious to me. I also tagged along with both families that night to the release party for the Bear Family records collection of the 1927 and 1928 Bristol sessions.

Radio shows! I was recently interviewed by Bea Thompson for her show on WBAV FM, here in Charlotte. You may have also heard me on WNCW's What It Is this week, talking about the Columbia Museum show. I'll also be on the next couple of weeks, so check it out at
whatitisradio.org.

If you're in the UK and Ireland this summer, you'll see my posed pics of the legendary Patrick Street, helping to promote the band's upcoming tour. You'll also see my photos in an upcoming episode of Army Wives (more on this soon). Along with some new publications of my
GBV pics, you can also see my photos in this week's Village Voice, in a great article about the Big Star Third tribute shows. Check them out at http://www.villagevoice.com/2011-03-16/music/big-star-s-third-onstage-in-new-york-at-last/ . I also have some photos in the new CD by the Lucky Five.

Many other things to tell you about, but that will wait for another posting. Spring is here, and I hope to see you all somewhere soon.
Best wishes and take care,
-Daniel

Hello Everyone-

opening night party. Please come by, say hello and check out the photos. You can get directions to the gallery from their website, www.circagallerync.com.

Things have been busy here. Continued publications of my Guided by Voices across the US, and elsewhere. I also did recent work with Chimera Records (Sean Lennon's label), Robin Trower, Bruce Joyner & The Reconstruction, Posies, Clyde Wright of the Golden Gate Quartet,
Carolina Chocolate Drops, Chatham County Line, and others. I hope you got to see my Chatham County Line in the January issue of Our State Magazine. You may also have seen my photos connected to the recent Big Star Third tribute shows in Chapel Hill, NC. Be on the lookout for more pics from this project.

I'm thrilled to announce that I'm going to New York City the first weekend of March to do photos for the legendary Left Banke, who are doing their first shows in 42 years. Work is continuing on the book of the NC rock scene of the 1960s. Check back soon for more updates.
Here's to the oncoming spring season,
