What's New

2004

Hey Everybody-

Just a short note after another birthday for me this week. (I'm not feeling my age this week, so I won't tell you how old I really am.) The photo of Arthur and Johnny of Love further down this page can also be seen in the December issue of Mojo Magazine. The editor had to point out to me that it may well be the first published pic of the two together in 35 years. Whoa. New issues of the Big Takeover, Harp, Amplifier and a couple others also feature my handiwork.

The Deep Purple bio (which features two of my pics) is now available through ecwpress.com. I do promise to put a pic of that Weezer bio up on the site soon. We've also just completed the photos to the upcoming Avett Brothers live album, as well as recent new work with Chris Stamey, Roman Candle, the Sammies (a rockin' band out of Charlotte), and a few others.

Thanks to everyone who checked my Down From The Mountain tour photo show last month. And yes, another show of Cash photos will be back in the coming months. Love to all, God bless John Peel, Carl Wayne (the Move), Greg Shaw, and my cat Seth. Take care,
-Daniel

Hey Everybody-
Some of you have asked when I was going to do another show of my photos. Well, funny you ask that. To help out a fellow photographer, I will be taking his space, and exhibiting at Queen's Beans Coffeehouse (site of July's Cash photo show) in November. While the Cash exhibition will appear again at a time and venue to be determined, I have decided for this show to exhibit my mostly unpublished work from the Down From The Mountain tour in 2002. As some of you already know, I did much of that tour's press photos, and I'm glad to finally have the chance to exhibit some of these works.

The photos should be up sometime next week, with an official opening on gallery crawl night, Friday, Nov. 5. Tell your friends, bring your best Louvin Brothers records, and nudge your rich friends into buying some photos. (Or think of it as a birthday gift for me- my birthday's at the end of November.)

More photos coming soon to the website. Love to all, and take care.

Hey Everybody-

Whoa, where did the summer go? Too much, too fast, too soon. Greetings again from Photoland, where we now reside with a new address and server! Hoo-ha! Much love and respect to webguru Laurie for keeping my punk ass online.

Where to start, wow....The first-ever showing (held here in Charlotte in July) of my Johnny Cash photos was a rousing success. Thanks to all that came and saw my photos, bought my photos, or told their friends about my photos. This show may appear again, either in town or elsewhere. It's hard to believe it's been a year since we lost The Man.

My stuff is in books and CDs! (But not Books On Tape, thankfully.) Look for my photos of Weezer on the cover and inside a recent bio by ECW Press, out of Canada. You can also see my photos in a new book by Mark Kemp, chroncling the Southern music scene, and a forthcoming biography of Lucinda Williams. On a non-music note, you can see 16 of my photos in a new coffeetable book on our fair city of Charlotte. (Yes, we do lots more than them rock folks.)

You can also see my photos all over a new best-of by Deke Dickerson, out this month via the fancy-schmancy Hightone Records. It's very cool, so check it out. You can also see my photos in new CDs by Roman Candle, Les Dirt Clods, Nicole Atkins, Tyre Fyre, Sonny Sonnenstein, and possibly a couple more that I don't know about yet. Put this on top of recent publications by Harp, Amplifier, Revolver, several UK papers, Rolling Stone, and a few others. Sadly, my Rockrgrrl cover got wiped off the front when the mag ran behind in publishing, and they decided to put somebody else all hip to the kids on the cover, instead. However, my photos of the Butchies are still featured inside the magazine, so show some love to the Butchies and check out the article.

Pete BestHighlights this summer...the Little Steven Underground Garage festival, where I met Pete Best, Bo Diddley, and Nancy Sinatra, and got to see the NY Dolls, Stooges, Creation and many more rock it out. More photos and a story of this day will come soon. Riding in my car with Garth Hudson of the Band, and Sneaky Pete Kleinow of the Flying Burrito Brothers, taking them to a restaurant after a show. Doing photos with the Dillards., as well as recent shoots with Chris Stamey, and Ken Stringfellow. And meeting the surviving members of the MC5, Mark Arm and others was a frickin' blast.

Love to all. Godspeed, John Van Dam and Carl Wayne. Take care,
-Daniel

Hey Everybody-

A few Big Items to report. Yes, the rumors are true- I will be exhibiting a
selection of my Johnny Cash photos at Queen's Beans Coffeehouse, on Camden
Road in Charlotte (across from the Charlotte Art League) throughout the
month on July, with an official opening o Friday, July 2. July will mark
the one-year anniversery of Mr. Cash's final show at the Carter Fold, and
with a rush of attention coming later this year to Cash's final months, I
wanted to exhibit these photos without pretense, and let the photos stand
on their own. Hope you'll come out to the show, and tell your rich friends
to buy some photos.

Speaking of the Carter Fold, I spent May 29 back at the Fold, as A.P.
Carter's birthplace was re-dedicated and opened to the public. Much of the
Carter and Cash families turned out for the event, including John Carter
Cash (whose picture you can see if you scroll down), Carlene Carter, and
Janette and Joe Carter (children of A.P. and Sara Carter), as well as
legendary songwriter Tom T. Hall and Marty Stuart, who performed a benefit
concert for the Fold that evening. It really was an amazing day, and all of
my love goes out to Rita Forrester and the Carter family for being so good
to me.

My Butchies photo on the cover of Rockrgrl Magazine should be out shortly,
as well as the Weezer book from ECW Press in Canada that features several
of my photos. You can also currently see my Int'l Noise Conspiracy photo in
the current issue of Spin Magazine. Recent work (several of which you can
now view on this page- thanks, Laurie) includes work with Chris Stamey, Int'l
Orange, Immortal Lee County Killers, Arlo Guthrie and family (thanks Johnny
and Sara Lee), and recent encounters with artists such as the Darkness,
Rush, Roger McGuinn, Janis Ian, and many more. There's a Roman Candle EP
with my photos that's in the works, as well as projects here and there that
I'll update in the near future.

Hope to see you all at my show in July. Happy birthday, Sandra. Love to
all, and take care.

Hey Everybody-

Well, I keep meaning to be better about reporting back about my recent
exploits, but until I do, thanks for checking back with my website. You may
have noticed that we've got a bunch of new photos on the site, both with
brand new shots in this section, and in our expanded version of the "People
That Rock" section. Thanks to Laurie and to Jay for kicking this website
into high gear. There's more photos to come, so let me know what you think
of the new stuff.

Possibly the biggest highlight recently was my trip to Austin in March for
the SXSW festival, which again allowed me to stumble into some pretty
awesome shows and experiences. In a day's time, I met and photographed Roky
Erickson, John Cale and Alex Chilton. Damn. Cale's surprise appearance at a
private benefit for Alejandro Escovedo was just fantastic, and I can't tell
you how good it was to see Alejandro again. And folks, Big Star rocked the
house. Also on my fave list for that week was Little Richard, Mission Of
Burma, Von Bondies, Hives, Cynics, Rockfour and Bob Neuwirth, among .

We've also just returned from a day at Merlefest, and will have photos to
show you soon. Other recent photo highlights was Pinetop Perkins, who was
Muddy Waters' longtime keyboardist, Marah, Metallica, and the achievement
of photographing Clay Aiken and Hank Williams III on the same day, and on
the same rolls of film. Try that sometime. Those of you in Charlotte also
got to see me make my singing debut, as I sang "Old Brown Show" with
Poprocket at a recent Beatles tribute night. Reports suggest that I was
relatively on key, and had the place rockin', so we're hoping to have photo
evidence of all of this soon.

Back on a cover! Check out my photos of the Butchies (taken in 15 minutes
during SXSW) on the cover of Rockrgrrl Magazine this month. One of my Thad
Cockerell photos is also currently featured on the front of Country Music
People, an old-school country mag out of the UK. I also have a photo of
Jeff Tweedy in the current issue of Rolling Stone (get well soon, Jeff, we
miss you). You can also currently see photos of mine in Rockpile, DIW
Magazine, Amplifier and the Big Takeover, among others. (FYI, the upcoming
issue of the Big Takeover also features my interview with Colin Blunstone &
Rod Argent of the Zombies. Awww yeah.) You can also see my photos in the
new CD and single by the Avett Brothers, which I can honestly say has been
one of the best projects I've ever been involved with.

There's more in the works for May, as well as an upcoming photo show this
summer, so check this website back often, and tell your friends to buy my
photos. They'll thank you for it later. Love to all. Talk to you soon, and
take care.
-Daniel
P.S. Thank you, Paul Atkinson. Godspeed.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Hey Everybody-

I just got word that the Rusty Evans/Johnny Cash tribute show scheduled for
Feb. 26th at the Great Aunt Stella Center in Charlotte, and hence my exhibit
of my Cash photos, has been cancelled. I will still exhibit some of my Cash
photos here in town either in March or April, and I will let you know when that
happens. Sorry about this, and take care,
-Daniel

02.08.04

Hello-

Yes, I've slacked on writing an update for a while now. I just didn't think
it would be 2004 before I did so. It was a busy October and November, while
December only had a few gigs, as I tried to catch up on printing photos,
sleeping, and visiting family. Here's a rundown of the highlights....

The big gig, in many ways, was covering the Johnny Cash memorial concert in
Nashville on November 10. What a crazy day (days, actually, as I didn't get
to sleep til far into the next day). Kris Kristofferson, Hank Jr., the Cash
and Carter families. You'll see some photos from this event soon. On a
related note, my photo of Johnny with step-daughter Rosie Adams appeared in
several publications last month, after her tragic passing in October. All
my love goes out to the Cash and Carter families, and I hope that 2004 will
bring you peace in these crazy times.

On another related note, I am putting together what has been my most
frequently requested showing. I'll be exhibiting my photos of Johnny Cash
here in Charlotte on Thursday, February 26, at the Great Aunt Stella
Center
. In conjunction with singer Rusty Evans, who will be performing a
Cash tribute show that night, I'll have 20 of my photos on display, with
comments from myself about those amazing few weeks. Doors should be open at
7pm, so come on out. There'll be more about this exhibtion, as well, in the
weeks to come.

Some of my recent gigs include photos for the Shazam, Boss Martians, Avett
Brothers, Arthur Smith (Dueling Banjos, heck yeah) and several other
artists. I've also gotten to shoot some fantastic shows, including Arthur
Lee and Love, Rocket From The Tombs, Black Keys, Gillian Welch, Tell Us The
Truth tour (with Billy Bragg, Steve Earle, Lester Chambers, Mike Mills and
more), the Association and Chip Taylor. I also did photos for the recent
Raleigh benefit concert for Alejandro Escovedo, which featured the original
Backsliders, Superchunk, Six String Drag and Marah, and was just simply an
amazing day.

Hope you got to see my photo of Jack White in the year-end edition of Time
Magazine. Recent publications also include Rolling Stone, Harp, Celebrity
Justice (it's a long story), and a new Good Charlotte biography. You can
also see my interview with My Morning Jacket, as well as other reviews and
photos in the new issue of the Big Takeover. (And yes, that's my Left Banke
story that Belle & Sebastian discuss over half of their own interview. Drop
me a line sometime, Stuart, and I'll give you the full lowdown on the LB.)

And once again, I'll be at SXSW in Austin, Texas next month, enjoying Ian
McLagan's free show at Mother Egan's on the 18th, among other things. Come
say hi, if you're around. Hope you all are doing well. Many, many, and many
more thanks to Laurie Koster for updating my website, and for putting many
of the new photos on the site. Love to all, drop me a line and take care.
-Daniel

2003

10.20.03

Hey Everybody-
Just a quick update on all the craziness going on. It's been a busy month. Worked with the legendary Merle Haggard in Virginia, the Rachels in Louisville, KY, the Shazam and Boss Martians in Raleigh, and shooting some pretty cool shows here and there (Arthur Lee & Love, Black Keys, Gourds, Kiss, Gillian Welch, etc.). I recently had photos in GQ, Guitar World Acoustic, and a few others. You can also see some of my Johnny Cash photos in the Country Weekly tribute to the Man In Black, as well as the November issue of Mojo Magazine.

God bless you, Mr. Cash. Check out some of the new photos on the site, and I hope to see you all out on the road soon. Take care,
-Daniel

08.30.03

Hey Everybody-

For those of you near the Charlotte and Gaston County area, I will be live on WSGE, 91.7FM, on September 2 at 8am. Yes, it's an early show, so tape it, and listen to it later when you're actually awake. (Chances are I will.) I'll be talking about my photography career, experiences, and other things that are- gosh!- all about me. Tune in, and I'll try not to stumble over my words too much.

08.26.03

Hey Everybody-

I apologize for not getting around to updating you all on my recent photos and events. This summer hasn't been as frenetic as the past couple of years, but it has produced some very cool things to tell you about.

By far, the most amazing and emotional was photographing Mr. Johnny Cash over two Saturdays in Virginia earlier this summer. This included his appearance at the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, VA on June 21, which was also his first appearance after the passing of wife June Carter Cash the month before. I honestly cannot put into words what witnessing this event was like. Amazing, emotional, heartfelt, the hyperbole could go on for ages. My sincere thanks goes to the Carter Family and their friends for being so gracious and welcoming to me, and all my love and appreciation goes to Mr. Cash, and his family. A further description of these shows will appear soon.

Another great event was photographing Les Paul over two days in Nashville last month, including his first appearance at the Ryman Auditorium in over 25 years. Needless to say, Les is the pioneer's pioneer in the field of music, and his hour-long show at the Ryman (at the spry age of 88) was just amazing. This show also included appearances by Howlin' Wolf guitarist Hubert Sumlin, rock and blues legend David Johansen, Nokie Edwards of the Ventures, Bela Fleck, David Morse, and a host of others.

Needless to say, the Johnny Cash appearances generated some interest in my photos, which were featured in Rolling Stone, Country Weekly and even by Mr. Cash's own record label, Lost Highway. Other publications of my photos (non-Cash related) included the London Telegraph, Oxford American, Sing Out!, and a few other papers. You can also see my photos in the European release of "Movin' On," the first album in 35 years by the legendary Remains. Working with this band, which opened for the Beatles on their 1966 American tour, was a dream come true for me. I should also mention that you can also check out my interviews with the fave '60s band the Left Banke in the current issue of the Big Takeover Magazine, along with several recent photos I've taken of the Flaming Lips, Link Wray and others.

That's what's (relatively) new out here. Hope you all are doing well. Hope to see you all out on the road somewhere soon. Best wishes, and take care.

Sincerely,
-Daniel

05.10.03

Hey Everybody-

I apologize for not writing sooner. I've been busy, Webmaster Jay's been VERY busy, and, well, we try. Actually, I was just saving up info to pass along to you, which I will bombard you with now.

IdlewildCovers of Magazines, covers of CDs....You can see my photos of Idlewild on the cover of the new issue of Amplifier Magazine. (That's national cover number 12, if you're counting along at home.) You can also see my cover photos of Wilco in the current issue of DIW Magazine. Getting to work with Wilco was a dream come true, and hopefully you will see more of my Wilco photos in the band's own press materials sometime this year. A recent cover of Paste Magazine also featured one of my Wilco photos, among several other artist's photos.

I also had the great honor of doing the cover for Caitlin Cary's excellent new album, I'm Staying Out. For somebody who was too shy to say hello the first time he saw Whiskeytown, getting to work with Caitlin was a lot of fun, and I'm more than thrilled to help spread the good word on her to the masses. Another photo from these same sessions can currently be seen in the new issue of Rolling Stone Magazine. (Ashton Kutcher on the cover, but rip the cover off after you buy it. Caitlin's nicer, and better to look at.)

On a related note, you can also see two of my photos in the new Ryan Adams biography, now out from Omnibus Press in England. (Yeah, I couldn't believe it, either. The book, I mean.) We've had another run of different magazine publishings, including Entertainment Weekly, Acoustic Guitar Magazine, No Depression, and others. Drop me a line and let me know if you see any more
of my snaps in the print world.

BlurSXSW rocked like a mother this year. Tons of great bands (Blur, Supergrass, Yardbirds), and I got to do posed shots of the Datsuns, Ian McLagan (Small Faces, hell yeah), Garth Hudson (the Band- ditto), Chip Taylor (writer of Wild Thing, Angel Of The Morning), Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and many others. If I could take that week, and multiply that by 52 weeks, I'd be one happy, exhausted kid. I've also done posed work recently with Al Perkins (Flying Burritos, Gram Parsons, etc.) and got posed of Doc Watson and Dr. Ralph Stanley at Doc's 80th birthday party. Amazing stuff (the event, mind you. The photos were cool, too).

Also, if you live in Charlotte, NC, you can now also see my photos at Dish Restaurant, a super-happening place at Central Avenue and Thomas Avenue. This show is titled "Curious Travelers" (aka Damn, That Fool Takes a Lot Of Pictures). Come by, eat, drink, and buy some photos. No pressure on that, mind you.

Lately, I want to send my best wishes to everyone involved with the recent Ellen Gray benefit in Chapel Hill, NC. Ellen was a dear friend that cancer took away from us last year, and many of my photos of her were used in promoting the show (and her foundation has my permission to continue to use the photos). And God bless you, Ellen....

Love to all, drop me a line sometime, and take care.
-Daniel
May 10, 2003

P.S. Happy birthday Sandra.

02.24.03

I have two shows coming up:

01.01.03

Hello again to everybody, wherever you are. As you may have noticed, this site is now in the capable and lightning-quick hands of Mr. Jay Garrigan, and I'm really glad to have him along to put up with my rubbish. This site should hopefully now give you a better sense of the madness that is my life, and my work. Check it out, and lemme know what you think.

Alright, a recap of the past couple of months (if such a thing is possible). The Down From The Mtn. summer tour is now done, and being involved with it (albeit from the outskirts) was an eye-opening experience. There is something to be said for standing in the middle of stadiums, listening to the echo of 15,000 people singing a Carter Family song. You can currently see of my press photos for the tour on the tour's press page, Emmylou Harris' official site, and at the House of Blues website.

Along with that, I had the distinct honor of doing the first promo shots for the legendary Remains (the band that opened for the Beatles on their last tour) in 35 years. I also covered the 25th anniversary of Elvis' death in Memphis (check out the Stories From The Road section for this bizarre trip), did new promo shots for Hobex (much love to respect to Greg Humphreys, Hobex and Tone-Cool Records for being so good to me), Jody Stephens (Big Star- Rock!) and Sorry About Dresden (Saddle Creek Records), shot a lot of shows (the Flatlanders, Earl Scruggs, Remains, Doves, Taj Mahal, and the Sights stand out), and continued to build on my '60s record and video collection, among other projects.

Other stuff to keep an eye out for: one of my photos of Tommy Lee (taken at Ozzfest two years ago) is currently being used in VH1's "100 Sexiest Men of Rock." I don't have cable, so lemme know how it looks. (A couple of photos of Queens Of The Stone Age from this same show are also in the current issue of Amplifier Magazine, by the way.)

On an even scarier note, one of my photos of Ted Nugent will soon be used as the cover to a upcoming Best Of CD (released by EMI Classics). Considering that this is to date the only show I've ever been thrown out of, this is just too damn funny. Look for the CD (Where's the vinyl version?) at Wal-Mart, and other fine stores.

Be on the lookout for my photos in the new issue of Guitar Player, the back cover of the still-current issue of Magnet (Guided by Voices on the back, Paul Westerberg on the front), and upcoming issues of Devil In The Woods Magazine, and other fine rags. You can also see my photos on the cover of the new Vigilantes Of Love CD, as well as the upcoming Beaver Nelson record, and inside the new David Childers CD. And yes, my photos are still in new records by Guided by Voices, Elf Power, Danielle Howle, and a few others.

There's more to come this month. Keep checking this page for updates. Love to all. Keep in touch, and take care.

Sincerely,

-Daniel
