Hey Everybody-
Just a quick update on all the craziness going on. It's been a busy month. Worked with the legendary Merle Haggard in Virginia, the Rachels in Louisville, KY, the Shazam and Boss Martians in Raleigh, and shooting some pretty cool shows here and there (Arthur Lee & Love, Black Keys, Gourds, Kiss, Gillian Welch, etc.). I recently had photos in GQ, Guitar World Acoustic, and a few others. You can also see some of my Johnny Cash photos in the Country Weekly tribute to the Man In Black, as well as the November issue of Mojo Magazine.

God bless you, Mr. Cash. Check out some of the new photos on the site, and I hope to see you all out on the road soon. Take care,
-Daniel

Hey Everybody-

For those of you near the Charlotte and Gaston County area, I will be live on WSGE, 91.7FM, on September 2 at 8am. Yes, it's an early show, so tape it, and listen to it later when you're actually awake. (Chances are I will.) I'll be talking about my photography career, experiences, and other things that are- gosh!- all about me. Tune in, and I'll try not to stumble over my words too much.

08.26.03

Hey Everybody-

I apologize for not getting around to updating you all on my recent photos and events. This summer hasn't been as frenetic as the past couple of years, but it has produced some very cool things to tell you about.

By far, the most amazing and emotional was photographing Mr. Johnny Cash over two Saturdays in Virginia earlier this summer. This included his appearance at the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, VA on June 21, which was also his first appearance after the passing of wife June Carter Cash the month before. I honestly cannot put into words what witnessing this event was like. Amazing, emotional, heartfelt, the hyperbole could go on for ages. My sincere thanks goes to the Carter Family and their friends for being so gracious and welcoming to me, and all my love and appreciation goes to Mr. Cash, and his family. A further description of these shows will appear soon.

Another great event was photographing Les Paul over two days in Nashville last month, including his first appearance at the Ryman Auditorium in over 25 years. Needless to say, Les is the pioneer's pioneer in the field of music, and his hour-long show at the Ryman (at the spry age of 88) was just amazing. This show also included appearances by Howlin' Wolf guitarist Hubert Sumlin, rock and blues legend David Johansen, Nokie Edwards of the Ventures, Bela Fleck, David Morse, and a host of others.

Needless to say, the Johnny Cash appearances generated some interest in my photos, which were featured in Rolling Stone, Country Weekly and even by Mr. Cash's own record label, Lost Highway. Other publications of my photos (non-Cash related) included the London Telegraph, Oxford American, Sing Out!, and a few other papers. You can also see my photos in the European release of "Movin' On," the first album in 35 years by the legendary Remains. Working with this band, which opened for the Beatles on their 1966 American tour, was a dream come true for me. I should also mention that you can also check out my interviews with the fave '60s band the Left Banke in the current issue of the Big Takeover Magazine, along with several recent photos I've taken of the Flaming Lips, Link Wray and others.

That's what's (relatively) new out here. Hope you all are doing well. Hope to see you all out on the road somewhere soon. Best wishes, and take care.

Sincerely,
-Daniel

Hey Everybody-

I apologize for not writing sooner. I've been busy, Webmaster Jay's been VERY busy, and, well, we try. Actually, I was just saving up info to pass along to you, which I will bombard you with now.

IdlewildCovers of Magazines, covers of CDs....You can see my photos of Idlewild on the cover of the new issue of Amplifier Magazine. (That's national cover number 12, if you're counting along at home.) You can also see my cover photos of Wilco in the current issue of DIW Magazine. Getting to work with Wilco was a dream come true, and hopefully you will see more of my Wilco photos in the band's own press materials sometime this year. A recent cover of Paste Magazine also featured one of my Wilco photos, among several other artist's photos.

I also had the great honor of doing the cover for Caitlin Cary's excellent new album, I'm Staying Out. For somebody who was too shy to say hello the first time he saw Whiskeytown, getting to work with Caitlin was a lot of fun, and I'm more than thrilled to help spread the good word on her to the masses. Another photo from these same sessions can currently be seen in the new issue of Rolling Stone Magazine. (Ashton Kutcher on the cover, but rip the cover off after you buy it. Caitlin's nicer, and better to look at.)

On a related note, you can also see two of my photos in the new Ryan Adams biography, now out from Omnibus Press in England. (Yeah, I couldn't believe it, either. The book, I mean.) We've had another run of different magazine publishings, including Entertainment Weekly, Acoustic Guitar Magazine, No Depression, and others. Drop me a line and let me know if you see any more
of my snaps in the print world.

BlurSXSW rocked like a mother this year. Tons of great bands (Blur, Supergrass, Yardbirds), and I got to do posed shots of the Datsuns, Ian McLagan (Small Faces, hell yeah), Garth Hudson (the Band- ditto), Chip Taylor (writer of Wild Thing, Angel Of The Morning), Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and many others. If I could take that week, and multiply that by 52 weeks, I'd be one happy, exhausted kid. I've also done posed work recently with Al Perkins (Flying Burritos, Gram Parsons, etc.) and got posed of Doc Watson and Dr. Ralph Stanley at Doc's 80th birthday party. Amazing stuff (the event, mind you. The photos were cool, too).

Also, if you live in Charlotte, NC, you can now also see my photos at Dish Restaurant, a super-happening place at Central Avenue and Thomas Avenue. This show is titled "Curious Travelers" (aka Damn, That Fool Takes a Lot Of Pictures). Come by, eat, drink, and buy some photos. No pressure on that, mind you.

Lately, I want to send my best wishes to everyone involved with the recent Ellen Gray benefit in Chapel Hill, NC. Ellen was a dear friend that cancer took away from us last year, and many of my photos of her were used in promoting the show (and her foundation has my permission to continue to use the photos). And God bless you, Ellen....

Love to all, drop me a line sometime, and take care.
-Daniel

P.S. Happy birthday Sandra.

I have two shows coming up:

01.01.03

Hello again to everybody, wherever you are. As you may have noticed, this site is now in the capable and lightning-quick hands of Mr. Jay Garrigan, and I'm really glad to have him along to put up with my rubbish. This site should hopefully now give you a better sense of the madness that is my life, and my work. Check it out, and lemme know what you think.

Alright, a recap of the past couple of months (if such a thing is possible). The Down From The Mtn. summer tour is now done, and being involved with it (albeit from the outskirts) was an eye-opening experience. There is something to be said for standing in the middle of stadiums, listening to the echo of 15,000 people singing a Carter Family song. You can currently see of my press photos for the tour on the tour's press page, Emmylou Harris' official site, and at the House of Blues website.

Along with that, I had the distinct honor of doing the first promo shots for the legendary Remains (the band that opened for the Beatles on their last tour) in 35 years. I also covered the 25th anniversary of Elvis' death in Memphis (check out the Stories From The Road section for this bizarre trip), did new promo shots for Hobex (much love to respect to Greg Humphreys, Hobex and Tone-Cool Records for being so good to me), Jody Stephens (Big Star- Rock!) and Sorry About Dresden (Saddle Creek Records), shot a lot of shows (the Flatlanders, Earl Scruggs, Remains, Doves, Taj Mahal, and the Sights stand out), and continued to build on my '60s record and video collection, among other projects.

Other stuff to keep an eye out for: one of my photos of Tommy Lee (taken at Ozzfest two years ago) is currently being used in VH1's "100 Sexiest Men of Rock." I don't have cable, so lemme know how it looks. (A couple of photos of Queens Of The Stone Age from this same show are also in the current issue of Amplifier Magazine, by the way.)

On an even scarier note, one of my photos of Ted Nugent will soon be used as the cover to a upcoming Best Of CD (released by EMI Classics). Considering that this is to date the only show I've ever been thrown out of, this is just too damn funny. Look for the CD (Where's the vinyl version?) at Wal-Mart, and other fine stores.

Be on the lookout for my photos in the new issue of Guitar Player, the back cover of the still-current issue of Magnet (Guided by Voices on the back, Paul Westerberg on the front), and upcoming issues of Devil In The Woods Magazine, and other fine rags. You can also see my photos on the cover of the new Vigilantes Of Love CD, as well as the upcoming Beaver Nelson record, and inside the new David Childers CD. And yes, my photos are still in new records by Guided by Voices, Elf Power, Danielle Howle, and a few others.

There's more to come this month. Keep checking this page for updates. Love to all. Keep in touch, and take care.

Sincerely,

-Daniel
