Hey Everybody-

How are you? For those of you in Charlotte, I will have several photos on display at the Ballantyne Village Theater this Wednesday evening (Oct. 25). The Light Factory is sponsoring a screening of "The Last Waltz," the brilliant 1976 concert movie about the Band's final show, and have asked me to exhibit my photos of musicians that were featured in the film. Arrivals start at 6pm, with the movie starting at 8pm, so come on out and enjoy the show, and my photos. Call the Light Factory at (704) 333-9755 for more info.

As you may already know, here in Charlotte, my new show, "Music In A Crowded State: Photographs of North Carolina Musicians," will be at the Lesbian & Gay Community Center throughout the entire month of November. This is a show featuring musicians from all over the state, both young and old, and known and should-be-better-known. Many of these photographs have never been published, and several are being exhibited for the first time.
You can call the Center, located at 1401 Central Avenue, at (704) 333-0144 for additional info and Center hours.

I will also be exhibiting my Johnny Cash photos throughout the month of November at the Bickett Gallery (www.bickettgallery.com) in Raleigh. This is the first time that this show has traveled to another city, and will feature some never-before exhibited photographs. Opening night will be on Friday, November 10th, and the gallery will be holding a two-night tribute to Cash on November 18th, with many notable area musicians playing their favorite Cash songs. Call the gallery at (919) 836-5358 for more information.

These will also be my last photography shows for some time, as I'll be working on some new projects in the near future.

Call or email anytime, best wishes and take care.

Hey Everyone-

The Independent Weekly in the Chapel Hill and Raleigh area has a very nice article on me in this week's article. My thanks for Grant Britt, Grayson Currin and Dave Wilson for everything (although I should mention that the Big Takeover is the oldest INDEPENDENT rock paper in America, just to clarify that). Check out the article at-

http://www.indyweek.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A34772

You can also hear my appearance on WBT radio two weeks ago via the podcast section at www.wbt.com. Look up the Thursday July 13th section at 7pm, and listen away.

Come on out to the Muse this week for the final few days of my Johnny Cash photo show. This show won't be seen in Charlotte again for quite some time, so come by and check it out.

Much more to come soon. See you all soon, and take care.

Hey Everybody-

Whoa, where did the first half of 2006 go? I looked at my last update this morning and realized that it's been two months since I last posted anything. So, we've got lots of updating to do....

"Johnny Cash and the Carter Family, Farther Along," a new show of my Johnny Cash photos from 2003, are now up at the Evening Muse (corner of 36th St. and N. Davidson St., in the NoDa) throughout the month of July. This show features never-before printed or published photos, and a new text by yours truly. My thanks to the Charlotte Observer, and all the other media outlets for mentioning this show. Come by and check out the show this month, as it will probably be the last time I exhibit these photos for quite a while. Email me or call the Muse at (704) 376-3737 is you'd like more info. You can also see one of my Cash photos in the new issue of Mojo Magazine, which should be arriving on our shores very shortly.

My photos are everywhere! Well, almost. You can see my handiwork all over the new Son Volt DVD "Six String Belief," the new Chatham County Line CD (out on YepRoc Records), Sammies (out on MoRisen), Roman Candle (out on V2 Records) Don Dixon (125 Records), 4th Ward (check out their website), and others. We've also been published recently in Mojo Magazine, and other papers that I still need to get a copy of.

Recent cool shoots incliude Dr. Ralph Stanley's annual festival in Virginia, Roman Candle's CD release party, a new run of Wildwood Flowers (featuring Charlotte's own Volatile Baby) in Fayetteville, NC, Tommy Cash (yes, Johnny's brother) in Denton, NC, and many other cool shows and events. And yes, more photos will be posted on the site soon. The last two months have been very slammed for me, and I hope to get everything back up to speed soon.

Have a great summer, and I'll see you all soon.

Hey Everybody-

With the release of Johnny Cash's American V album due July 4, the time seemed right to do another engagement of my Cash photos at the Evening Muse, here in Charlotte. Mark it on your calendar, all through July, my photos and I will be back for another (and dare I say it, better) show. New prints, unseen photographs, and a new introduction from myself. The photos will be on sale again, so tell your friends and family members, and I hope to see you out there in July.

Take care,
-Daniel

5.09.06

Hey Everybody-

Sorry it's taken me a while to write since my last pre-SXSW communique. There's been a lot of busy times, and waiting for some events to come to fruition. But here's what's going on now.

"6 String Belief," Son Volt's new DVD and featuring all photos by yours truly, will be out on May 23. Sony Legacy is featuring my work all over the packaging, in print ads and everywhere else. You can even see footage of my photo shoot with Son Volt before the show in the DVD's bonus features. Needless to say, I'm mighty thrilled with this one, and hope that you all enjoy the DVD. And my photos, too.

But wait, there's more! Photos from a new shoot with Roman Candle last month will be featured in their new album, out June 20 on V2-Artemis Records. Look for my pics on print ads, promo pics, and inside the Wheaties box for their Roman Candle Rules special edition cereal. Okay, the last one is still in the discussion stages, but hey, it could happen. But eveything else is a go, so be ready when it hits the stores.

The Sammies' debut, which looks and sounds pretty damn cool, is out on June 20, as well, while Chatham County Line's new album (photographed by you know who) is out on May 23. You can also see my pics in Lind Me Four, a limited-edition EP of Bob Lind covers by Charlotte legend Jamie Hoover. Get it now, before it sells on ebay for hundreds of dollars.

And publications! New publications include Mojo Magazine in the UK, for their story on Arthur Lee and Love, Creative Loafing's special music issue, American Songwriter, Amplifier, and the Big Takeover. The Takeover also features my interviews with Elbow, Ian McLagan, and others.

American V from Johnny Cash has been moved up to a July 4th release. This features songs from the period that I met and photographed the man, and I am anxiously awaiting this album's release. I really wish you all could have had the chance to see the man in person, even at a time when he was not in the best of health. Check back to this site for further updates about my Cash photos, and where you can see them soon.

Godspeed, Grant McLennan of the Go-Betweens. Thanks to all the folks that made SXSW so much fun this year. See you all on the road soon, and take care.

Hey Everybody-

Just wanted to give you an update before I headed to SXSW this week. Things have been busy here. Here's some of the highlights-

I just completed a big photo shoot with Chatham County Line for their new album, which will be out on Yep Roc in May. We'll also done some photos with Don Dixon (with one photos going in his new record), New Riders Of The Purple Sage (for their new promo shot), Gael Warning, and the Holloway and Modafferi families for the Charlotte Observer. Some new publications now on the stands, including a half-page photo of Johnny Cash's final show in the current special edition of Mojo Magazine, and a photo of the late, great Chris Whitley in Esquire Magazine. There are some others coming shortly, and I'll update you on those soon.

If you get the chance, check out the new Japanese edition of the Spongetones' new record (now out on Sony Japan). Many of my photos of the band in the studio have been put on the cover, and the album's beenre-designed to look like the Beatles' second album in America. Check it out on CD Baby, or wherever you prefer to shop.

On to Texas. Many pics coming soon. Thanks to all of you that came out to my photo show in Charlotte last month. And thank you again, Janette Carter (RIP) and the Carter Family, for being so good to me the past four years. And to the Beckies' Jimmy McAllister (RIP), for being one of the best friends I never got to meet. Love to all, and take care,
-Daniel

Hey Everybody-

Just wanted to let you know that the Lesbian & Gay Community Center will be holding a reception for my American Musicians photo series on Friday, February 10th from 7 to 9pm. I will be there that night, and I will also be the Center this Friday night, February 3, from 6 to 8pm for Gallery Crawl night. Come on out, and bring along your straight and/or gay friends, whichever you prefer.

We also have new publications to report: a John Carter Cash photo in Guitar World Acoustic, a pic of his daddy in a special Cash edition put out by Mojo And Q Magazine in England, and a pic in an upcoming Steve Earle book. The Avett Brothers' new album, Four Theives Gone, will also be out next week, with one of my pics, so you'd better pick it up, darn skippy.

Godspeed and thank you, Janette Carter. Take care,
-Daniel

Hey There Everybody-

Good Lord, we're already into 2006, aren't we? How'd that happen? Greetings to all of you new, old and newly old visitors to the site, and I hope that this upcoming year lives up to your hopes and expectations. We've got lots to tell you about, so here we go.

First, thanks to everyone who came out to the Evening Muse last month for my show of Johnny Cash photos. After the wonderful Observer write-up by Cathy Hight (thank you Cathy), the response was tremendous. Being someone who tends not to think about the effect my photos might have on anyone, to hear that people were driving in from other cities to see my photos was just amazing. Thank you, and yes, we will do this show again.

But while you're waiting for another Cash photo show, you can see some of those photos, and many more next month. Nothing like following a big show with an even bigger show, I say. The Lesbian & Gay Community Center, located on Central Avenue in Charlotte (near Fuel Pizza) has generously offered me their gallery space for February, and while I am neither Happy nor Lebanese (sorry about that joke), this is an tremendous gallery space, and is the largest gallery to showcase my work.

The show is entitled "American Musicians, 1996-2006," and will feature many of my photographs from all types of music genres. Many of these have never been seen before, or published. The show will be up the entire month of February, with an opening reception on Friday evening, February 3rd. Admission is also free, so you have no excuse to miss this, hee hee.

Lots of new photos! The past month has brought lots of new images, including photos with Carlene Carter, who both played live and recorded while in Charlotte last month. Check out Carlene's new site, carlenecarterfanclub.com, to see more of my photos. Also in the frame has been new photos with Dr. Ralph Stanley, the Sights, Doc Watson, the legendary dbs in the studio (thanks for putting up with me, guys), Volatile Baby, Don Dixon, a big photo shoot with Charlotte's own Sammies for their upcoming debut release, and shooting the Avett Brothers' sold-out New Year's show for both the Charlotte Observer, and for the band's own new poster, and their Myspace page. Other cool recent live shows included X, Cherryholmes, the Thieves (from Oxford, England), and more.

Yes, that was my Will Farrell photo in US Weekly in November, spending time with the Charlotte Wheelchair Basketball team. Recent publications also include the Charlotte Observer, AmpsEleven, and the Big Takeover, which also features my interviews with Eric Burdon and the Yardbirds in their current issue.

Check out my Myspace page, www.myspace.com/danielcoston, if you want to learn more about the man behind the camera. Hope you're doing well. Drop me a line here anytime, and take care.
